Oaxaca Day Of The Dead Running Retreat
October 29 - November 4
Join us in this running expedition into the heart of the Day of the Dead festivities in one of Mexico’s most sought-after destinations. A life-changing week filled with exceptional mountain running, top yoga and meditation classes, authentic Mexican cuisine, human connection and ancestral medicine.
Disconnect and reset as you enjoy the very best of Oaxaca’s cultural and culinary heritage and embark on an epic running adventure that will take us deep into the mountainous landscapes of the Sierra Norte.
The state of Oaxaca is regarded worldwide as one of the best culturally preserved and most stunning places in Mexico due to the large variety of indigenous cultures that live in its vast and varied landscapes, and the degree to which their now world famous cuisine and ancient traditions have been preserved.
The “Day Of The Dead” celebration in Mexico is a UNSECO “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. This is one of Mexico’s biggest and most widely known traditions; a celebration filled with vibrant colors, traditional “Cempasuchil” flowers and ancient rituals.
In Oaxaca City, where we will spend the first part of the trip, the Day of the Dead is celebrated with passion; families commemorating the deceased with altars filled with flowers, family photos and decorative skulls, traditional processions and candle-filled cemeteries where families spend the night with their deceased.
The second part of the trip consists of a stunning adventure into the Sierra Norte that will allow us to connect with the people, places and traditions from the Pueblos Mancomunados (Commonwealth Towns), a group of Zapotec communities that chose to establish their own unique socio-economic system in order to make a living sustained by trade, sustainability and ecology. You will run on the ancient trails of an original Zapotec route used over thousands of years for trade and commerce between the Gulf of Mexico and the central valleys of Oaxaca.
Each day will be accompanied by local and authentic cuisine, as well as yoga and meditation sessions led by our expert instructors, who will take us on a spiritual journey of inner peace and self-knowledge.
